I found myself reading this book more slowly than usual as I didn't want to miss any of the details or wonderful descriptions.
The story, which centres on the evacuation of the remote Scottish Island of St Kilda in 1930, has been meticulously researched and is beautifully written.
The narrative alternates between the lives of teenage Chrissie from St Kilda in 1927 and Fred Lawson, a Cambridge graduate, fleeing the Nazis in occupied France in 1941 flowed naturally without any annoying flashbacks to interrupt the story.
I will be recommending this book to my friends and family. It was a real education about the privation of life for the inhabitants on this remote Hebridean Island.
Not sure I agree that Fred's fellow student, Archie should be regarded as the hero of the story!
