I was mesmerised by this book from start to finish. The story predominantly takes place on the remote island of St Kilda where Fred Lawson, a Cambridge student, is spending the summer. There he meets Chrissie, an island girl who captivates him. The narrative follows their love and subsequent separation and what they would do to find each other again a decade later.
The author weaves such a beautiful picture of a world forgotten so long ago. Her descriptive prose transports you to lush green hill sides and sweeping vistas, but also to war torn Europe and Fred's struggle to escape a German prison camp and return home.
I found this book incredibly easy to read in short bursts, especially handy with an energetic two year old running around. This book is also perfect for anyone needing a little bit of an escape from modern life. I was so impressed with the writing, I'm going to look up the authors other books to read.
