This is the story of Fred who comes to the beautiful isolated island of St Kilda for the summer with his friend. Living with the locals, he falls in love with Chrissie, a young island girl who knows nothing of cars or shops and life on the main land in 1927. Their only contact with the outside world being fishing trawlers and occasional tourist boats in summer. The islanders live off the land and harvest the sea birds to see them through the long winters as they have done for centuries. Fred leaves after a misunderstanding and ends up working abroad. The Second World War sees Fred captured in France and all he can think of is the magical summer on St Kilda and the girl he still loves. Determined to find her again he escapes and makes his way across war torn Europe.
This is a well written book telling the story in the first person by the main characters.
The characters are nicely constructed and believable. I can recommend this novel to anyone who likes a good love story set in an unexpectedly sad period of history when a traditional way of life could no longer continue.
