What a beautiful book. This story is set in the remote location of st Kilda in the 1920s, a group of small islands off the west coast of Scotland and has a dual timeline set during the war in 1940. The authors writing style beautifully describes the ruggedness and remoteness of life on st Kilda and how hard the st kildans fought to keep their way of life alive. The main story is of a love affair gone awry by misunderstanding and how Fred, now a prisoner of war in war torn France wishes to get back to st Kilda to right those wrongs, little does he know that the islanders have long since been evacuated after coming close to starvation one very harsh winter. This is a wonderful book, a found the characters wholly believable and the descriptions of st Kilda breath taking. Historical fiction at its best. A fab 4 stars from me.
