Not just a striking cover
The striking cover for The Mayfly was what initially attracted me to the book - but I'm very happy to say that what's inside is equally as good!
The story starts with a pretty grim murder which instantly drew me in - we then switch to 1945 and Buchenwald - I will admit that I'm not big on history and wasn't sure if these parts would make me struggle with the story, but I actually surprised myself and found them really interesting, they seemed to be well researched and I even learnt a little.
This is a fast paced thriller, with quite a lot of characters popping up here and there, but I never found it difficult remembering them - I also had no idea how this book was going to end - couldn't guess the outcome at all.
The highlight for me though, was Charlie Priest - the author has written such a great character, he just becomes more and more likeable as time goes on and he adds some humour to the story with his fantastic one liners! I hear this is the start of a series with Priest and I really can't wait for more. I'm also hoping the author will let us explore William Priest (Charlie's serial killer brother) some more in future books - he's a character who I found really quite compelling, and was most interested in his and Charlie's relationship whilst in prison.
This s a great debut, which I highly recommend.
