A wonderful book full of suspense, descriptive language, and plot-twists. The suicide/murder itself provides mystery much like the novel "I am Pilgrim". The idea of such self-mutilation entices the reader into finding out what caused the man to do it, and why.
The use of the phrase "it's happening again" also leaves the reader in suspense, wondering why this type of event has happened before, and what has caused it to start up again. Also, it brings to light the seriousness of this murder when it is brought to the attention of higher-ups.
Being based in the 1940's, it also provides an unseen side of how crimes were solved back then, without the modern help of the 21st century. An extremely well-written book.
