I so wanted to like this book. I was first drawn to it by the Edward Hopper painting on the cover as I am a fan of his paintings. Initially, I rather enjoyed the storyline and thought that the writing was smashing. Indeed, just like another reviewer, I’m a huge fan of Anne Tyler and Anita Shreeve so felt the writing style would be similar. Alas that was not the case for me.

I honestly found the story rather dull. What I felt had real promise just seemed to drag and I really couldn’t warm to the characters. I’m sure that’s just me as I know Christine Dwyer Hickey is a well respected author. Perhaps I should have left more time before reading this as I’d just finished reading Joan Silber’s book Improvement which was beautiful so maybe My hopes were too high in this case.
