Not my cup of tea - despite some good writing

So if you like a book without much of a story but that is very character driven this could be for you.
Based around famous artist Edward Hopper and his frustrated wife, the book covers a summer at Cape Cod. He has lost his inspiration and is finding it difficult to paint. She feels she is an artist but just comes across as a miserable harpy.
It's hard to see why war orphan Michael, who is staying with the family next door for the summer, wants anything to do with Mrs 'Aitch.
I just found myself plodding through the pages and willing myself not to give up.
The writing is actually very good, very descriptive and delves into every flaw of every character but they are all just so dull that I found it impossible to care about any of them.
I can see that this is a marmite novel and I'm sure it will be critically acclaimed - it's just not my bag.
