This book wasn't exactly what I was expecting, but it was a good read and I flew through it, there was a good amount of suspense at the end of each chapter to make you want to read on. Gil's and Mayken's stories interwove nicely, and it didn't feel jarring to keep jumping between timescales. The language was a bit colourful (especially since the protagonists were children) and there was a bit more bloodshed than I would have liked, but I had forgotten it was based on a real shipwreck, and the epilogue really bought it home that these incredible events did actually happen!
The folklore aspect of things with Bullebak didn't really add anything to the story in my opinion, it took a true(ish) story and made it more implausible in my eyes, but there's no doubt the sailors would have engaged in telling fortunes so maybe they did believe tall tales in those days.
