This book is set during world war II and follows the story of a group of women who were all in the french resistance in Paris trying to help fight against the germans who invaded their country and their lives. Each of them were caught and deported to the Ravensbruck concentration camp. They had never known exactly what these camps had in store for the captured like themselves but to their horror they were about to find out. Although they were all young, only in their twenties, they found that by grouping together and helping each other these nine women could be stronger than just looking after themselves even though one of them was dutch and another was from Spain. The story covers some of their time in the camp but also follows and tells the tale of their daring escape. Luckily they managed to get away from the germans and live to tell their tale. Some of the facts , whilst horrifying, need to be told so that attrocities such as this never happen again and so that people of the future understand what people of the past went through so that they might live in freedom
