This is a memoir written about nine women that survived capture, torture and escape during the atrocities of World War 2. Drawing on interviews with her great-aunt and information from researching manuscripts, radio interviews and documentaries Gwen Strauss revives the memories of nine women and their fight for life and freedom.
The cruelty is disturbing to read and images do sit with the reader and once read you wish that you hadn’t! The research has been thorough and delving into her family history Gwen does start of the book by asking should the past rest in peace when history is restless?
If we learn anything from this it is the importance of friendship and the strength of spirit and body of the individuals. Writing this book must have been a very difficult task for the author but it is clear she wanted to give space for the nine women to exist.
