The Nine is based on a true story that follows 9 women who escape from captivity in Nazi Germany during WW2.

The author Gwen Strauss, is the great-niece of one of the nine, and uses interviews with her great-aunt and documents to form an account of the path the 9 women took to escape across war-torn Europe. I like how Gwen Strauss, devotes each chapter to one of the nine women, in which she gives a background of their life and the events up to their capture.

Each of these women worked for the resistance. Upon discovery of who they were the women were tortured and sent to a concentration camp in Nazi Germany, where they formed a close and powerful friendship. The book follows the nine women who were forced on a death march.

The book is full of emotion and demonstrates the horrors experienced by these women. Not knowing who the nine were previously I thought this was a great book in which I was able to learn new information about the struggles faced during the war.
