This book was so moving, the writing style really tells the story so clearly that sometimes you have moments of shock when you realise you aren't reading a fiction, this really happened.
I find factual books hard to read sometimes but this is written and structured beautifully, it breaks up the telling of the story with bits of information on how the research was found. It also goes through each of the nine women individually, as well as their story as a group, with the backstory of each one placed at a different point of the main story that is best suited to them. This allows the reader to "get to know" each of them and adds to just how moving the story is.
I was happy to see it didn't just stop at the end of the womens escape, it continues past that to let you know how their lives ended up and doesn't sugar coat the fact that it was hard for them even after they returned home. The ending is bitter sweet, all the more so because it's real, and I felt very emotional afterwards. I'm so glad to have read this book and I think Gwen Strauss has done each of the 9 women a great service in preserving their memories.
