The story of Helene, the authors aunt, Zaza, Nicole, Lon, Guigui, Zinka, Josee, Jacky and Mena and how they escape from Nazi Germany having all joined the French and Dutch resistance in their youth they are arrested in their twenties and sent to various camps they end up at the camp at Ravensbruck and are taken on to HASAG Leipzip. AS the war comes to an end they are forced on a death march as the allied troops are arriving and indeed bombing. The nine by luck and in some places kind assistance escape. The descriptions of each of the young women's stories are fascinating and so personal with their back stories on reasons to join the resistance being individual. Their chances of survival at every step of their journeys make you aware of just how fragile life was. The descriptions of conditions in the camps is horrific. Some will find it hard to read of the brutality, I found particularly to pregnant women having their babies in the camp. However it is important we don't forget the lives and deaths of all these women.
