At first I was hesitant to read this book. Although I have an interest in history there have been so many harrowing accounts in a similar vein that I wasn’t sure I wanted to read another one.

This book, however, is different. It is most beautifully written, with the author’s commitment to the accurate telling of the true story of “The Nine” and the amount of detailed research showing throughout. It is far more than just a historical list of events of events though and I was unsurprised to find that the author is a poet. This shows through the expressive style of writing and her clever use of words and phrases to create atmosphere. It is not overly emotional, despite he harrowing subject, and although the author does make some of her feelings know the reader is definitely left to draw their own conclusion.

I particularly enjoyed the last main chapter of the book which brought us up to date with what happened to the “nine” after the war. Much of this chapter brought tears to my eyes and moved me more than the rest of the book. It leaves you asking some serious questions about the human spirit, mental health and how we all deal with tragedy.

A beautiful book about a harrowing subject, excellently researched and written.
