Security guard and former serial killer Jim Doyle picks up a book in the supermarket he works in. He discovers to his horror that he is the subject of the the book - it's a true crime memoir, written by Eve Black, the sole survivor of his last violent attack. The purpose of the book is to hunt Jim down and ensure he faces the justice that he has evaded for years. Jim buys the book and begins to read.
We, the readers, then find ourselves reading Eve's book, in which she details Jim's previous crimes, including the terrible murder of her immediate family. Jim's world begins to unravel as he realises there is a chance that he could now be identified and his awful past revealed.
This was a great read and one of my favourite books of the year so far. I loved the concept of a book within a book. We get to know both Jim, the serial killer and Eve, the author of the memoir, finding out how her life progressed after losing her family. I'd highly recommend this to fans of crime.
