Eve Black’s family was murdered when she was just 12 years old and the murderer has never been caught. A university assignment where she finally starts to talk about the night her family were murder gets a really positive response and she’s encouraged to write a true crime book to help her process the death of her family, but also because it could draw the public’s attention back to what happened when she was a kid and maybe, just maybe, they could catch the killer.

Jim, the murderer, sees the book and starts to read it. We follow his journey as he reads the book and together with Jim, we learn what happened to Eve, in her own words. What follows is a tense and twisty ride where I was on the edge of seat.

The book within a book concept works really well, I don’t think I’ve read a book quite like this before. There are some great twists and like with any good psychological thriller, I found myself racing through the last 100 pages to find out what happened.

The only small criticism I have is that at times the story was slow, especially at the beginning. The book that Eve writes has stories of 4 families that she goes into detail about, but that don’t have clear endings. This is a little jarring and left me feeling unsatisfied and in the dark. The stories do get resolved at the end though, so don’t let that put you off.

Worth a read for the cool format alone.
