Set in London in the not too distant future The Quickening is the story of a female dominated world. Me and women are not equal. Women are in charge. After the world is ravaged by disease and then war Dana Mayer uses the time of political unrest to take control of the government and create a new regime where women lead. Men have lost all freedom. The lucky ones become gentlemen who must obey their wives or put to work in labour camps. The not so lucky become eunuchs who have been either chemically or mechanically castrated.

Arthur Alden has been infatuated with Dana since they were at university together. But over time he's realised just how terrible and wrong the new world is and is drawn into The Strife - a group of men who the thinks can help him get freedom.

The premise of the story is what first drew me to this book as I'm a fan of these types of dystopian novels such as The Handmaid's Tale, Vox and The Hierarchies.

I found The Quickening frightening and uncomfortable to read at times as it's graphic in places, yet also the sort of book I couldn't put down wanting to know where the story was going next.
