The Quickening by Talulah Riley is set not far in the future in a world where things are very different.
Told in alternating chapters by the main characters Arthur and Victoria it shows two very different people in the past and in the dystopia present.
Arthur meets Dana while at university and falls madly in love with her. However Dana is setting out to make her vision of a world when women are in charge a reality even back then. In the present Arthur is now a gentleman, a second class citizen to his wife Katherine who he married as he could not have Dana.
Victoria is a former reality TV pop star who is now high up in the new government. However is she lonely and is she enjoying the future as much as she thought she would.
The story goes into why the change happened and how men are now treated.
The novel makes you think and I enjoyed reading the two viewpoints of people with such differing status in the new world but both obsessed with Dana the new ruler
