Dr Shelby finds himself coerced by Sir Robert Cecil into sailing on a mission from him to Marrakech just as the plague descends on Bankside. This leaves Bianca Merton alone and in the dark about why he has gone and when he will return and also leaves her to battle both the plague and enemies at home.
This is different novel from the ones that have gone before with Shelby taking on the guise of an intelligentsia rather than a doctor and Bianca coming more into her own as the equal of any man with the cunning to boot. The risks for both are high as Shelby tries to complete the mission set him by Cecil while staying alive in the process and Bianca trying to hide her religion within Elizabethan England.
As usual there is the will they or won’t they in relation to their relationship and also the need for Shelby to balance his want to practice medicine the way that he wants to with the need to abide by the restriction imposed by the College of Physicians.
This is at times tense tale that keeps you wondering until the very end as to how matters will be resolved.
