One thing I liked immediately about the extract from 'The Scarlet Code' is the fact that the protagonist is female. It's quite unusual to find novels in this genre with a female lead, and a seemingly strong and interesting one at that, so this had me wanting to read on straight away.
I also enjoyed the introduction to Attica's own personal history, which I found intriguing. It really made me want to find out more about her life story, and see where her experiences take her.
The first impressions of Attica's relationships with other people, such as Jemmy, also drew me in, and I'd love to find out how they develop.
