The first couple of chapters were much slower paced but by the time I got to the middle of the book, I couldn’t stop reading it.

A story set in France around the time of the French Revolution is always going to be exciting from a history enthusiast’s point of view. Especially when the book is well-researched with a great combination of fact and fiction combined.

I love that the main character is half-English, half-African at a time when it must have been difficult to get by in society as such. Even more so that she further defies conventions by being a bisexual, assassin-trained, spy. I’m not sure how well English society at the time would have coped with her but that seems to be a running theme.

Also, her partner in crime of Jemmy is an excellent one. I can’t say that I don’t hope that she eventually chooses him over Atherton.

The book was well-written, easy to read and enjoyable. Would definitely recommend it and I’ll have to look out for others in the series!
