To describe this story as compulsive reading is an understatement, the characters are strongly developed and engaging and feels like close friends. The plot line continues to reveal each backstory, explaining why Abi, Neil (& Buddy) & Mutesi end up in the Tuckbox cafe at this time. Sam, the shooter, has such a heart-breaking back story that you can’t help but feel emotionally connected. Even Eliza, the negotiator, has her own history. I was surprised, as the story unfolded, to feel such strong empathy & understanding and to feel so desperate to right the wrongs, constantly looking for feasible solutions / endings.
The story is tense, compelling and desperate! The ending was an emotional rollercoaster- saving the most powerful backstory until last. I was in turmoil- desperate to read the ending but not wanting to finish & anxious about the choices - I sobbed and now I am bereft!
