Charity Norman is a new author to me so I was excited to read this book. Her writing style is beautiful and I was gripped from the first page.

Tuck box is a cafe close to a London railway station were customers can grab something before they continue their normal daytime activities. On this weekday morning everything is not so normal. A young man (Sam) enters the cafe and threatens those inside at gunpoint.

Everyone scatters in fear but three customers do not escape and they are held hostage by the gunman. Neil, Ali and Mutesi are all strangers each with their own lives and secrets, now forced to spend time together grappling with their own personal issues whilst trying to be united in escaping the terror they have experienced.

Eliza is the police negotiator who reaches out to Sam , trying to unravel the story behind the gunman’s actions and hopefully defuse the situation.

I felt connected to each character in this book. Their personal stories were so realistically written I felt I knew them, I could picture how they looked and behaved. As the book progresses the underlying heartbreaking life of Sam pulled at my heartstrings.

Everyone has their own struggles and demons and this book portrayed this so well. The cruelty of some people versus the kindness of others is so true to life.
I absolutely loved this book one which will stay with me for a long time.
