This is a really well written and constructed story. It has an explosive start, quite literally! The main characters are all well drawn, faults and all, and their backgrounds explored. They are all well rounded, properly 3-D characters.
The story itself moves backwards and forwards in time, giving the reader the chance to understand why and how events have come to where they are. This could have been a little confusing but is so well written that the story unrolls in a smooth narrative. This a very exciting and engrossing read although desperately sad at times. I loved the final scenes too, the sort of afterword, which were very touching where, if less well handled, could have quite mawkish.
I will be looking for more by this author.
