The second book in the Jackdaw series, The Serpent's Mark expands upon the world of Nicholas and Bianca that was built in The Angel's Mark. As with the first book, I am enamoured with almost every single character Perry creates. They're realistic and flawed to the point I can imagine interacting with them all myself and you find yourself rooting for their success (or demise in some cases) as the book moves along. The relationships between the characters are also readily believable.
Whilst I think I enjoyed the mystery of the first book more, I still found this one interesting and it built the world of the Jackdaw series around it. At points, however, Perry does the infuriating thing of letting a character discover something but withholding the information from the reader. I know the intent is to create further intrigue but instead I generally felt more disconnected. At one point, it was bad enough that I put the book one pause to read something else. That said, when I came back to it, I finished the book quite swiftly and I shall definitely be reading the third.
