Wow. I love historical fiction, but I know next to nothing about the 30 years war, beyond broadly when it happened and the sides involved.

Just the little intro the author has written whet my appetite for this book, before the book itself had even got going.

At 66 pages I thought this was going to be a huge first impression to review. Thankfully historical context and character information, which will be greatly appreciated by all readers. is approximately a third of this.

On to the story and immediately it has potential. It draws the reader in from the start, and you feel transported to these Ports and Towns and feel as though you are on a journey with the characters. A great bit of foreshadowing the action and battles to come, before it settles into the introduction of key characters and developing the setting.

I particularly like how the events in the HRE and Bohemia are conveyed by sailors gossip and rumor, rather than stated outright, as this led a realism to the story. Your average sailors and dockworkers aren't going to know the ins and outs of international politics after all.

This seems a really strong piece of historical fiction, and I would love to delve further into this book and time period
