This is a wonderful book, that I just could not put down. set during the 30 years war,(a period in history that I know very little about so I learned a lot from reading this book) telling the story of a young hero, Jack/Jacque/Jag. The story moves forward and backwards telling the story of his early life, his love of horses and skills with swords . Starting with his early years as a streetwise orphan in Amsterdam. I do not want to say too much about the narrative as I don't want to give away any spoilers.
This book has a wonderful direct style which brings both the times and the geographic region to life and maintains the reader's attention and interest throughout, no words are wasted.
This is a book for any lover of heroic and historic fiction, the most wonderful thing about it is that it is the first of a trilogy so I have still two more books to look forward to reading. I can not praise this book too much.
