I was a little unsure about this book to start with because I got the feeling it was going to be quite dense and it's not an inconsiderable length. However, once I got going with it, I was gripped.
Jag/Jacques/Jack is the main character who we follow as he grows up, moves across the continent and seeks revenge for the death of his parents. He is both likeable and slightly terrifying but, as a reader, I was immediately on his side. Despite his impulsive and wild character, or perhaps because of it, he draws people to him and it's often from their perspective that we see the story unfold. This provides a sort of zoomed out perspective on the story in that we see how parts of his life happen, but also gives us a very intimate look at how people perceive and relate to him.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book - it's an excellent example of historical fiction. I can't wait for the next one in the series to be released.
