Heavy
Unfortunately, The Silver Wolf simply wasn't for me. As someone who is a fan of historical fiction and high fantasy, including the likes of The Last Kingdom and A Game of Thrones, I thought this would be the perfect read for me, but this simply wasn't the case. I just couldn't get into this 17th-century-focussed tale.
However, I can see that it would be easy for fans of this genre to fall in love with this book! Anyone fond of impeccable (but heavy, and I mean heavy) levels of detail and world-building would find this simply unforgettable, I'm sure.
The plot itself revolves around Jack Fiskardo, who embarks upon a quest that will carry him inexorably from France to Amsterdam and then onto the battlefields of Germany. Fiskardo is well-written and realistic, which is a great bonus!
The Silver Wolf is a tale of secrets and treachery and the relentlessness of fate - but it is also a story of courage and compassion, of love and loyalty and ultimately of salvation, too. So, for history buffs, I couldn't think of a better read.
But for anyone else, I would issue a fair warning: this book might just be too heavy, if you are at all like me!
