I really loved reading this book. It had so much to it - mystery, war, violence, love, murder, friends and enemies. I knew little about this period in history, and by the end I both felt like I knew a reasonable amount about it but also that I'd like to find out more about what was happening across Europe at this time. I love that the story moves between countries, so there is a bit of an insight into what was happening where in those years. I also like how much knowledge and research the author has done to be able to create such a vivid picture of the time. Not just the battle scenes where there might be more knowledge about, but also the lives that ordinary people might have lived.

The main character, Jack, is both likeable and a little bit annoying at the same time. Although I feel like that is fairly normal for main characters. He seems to come through for people when it really matters, which has to count for something. I felt like I learned a lot about him, and would want to find out more which is another reason for me to pick up the second book in the series and a win for the author.

I'd also recommend it to others, which I don't always say about books.
