Straightforward thriller synopsis that sounded intriguing and dangerous. The Spiral starts out that way but then becomes something else entirely and I completely lost both my way and the plot.
The chapters of SERO were, to me, an intrusion into an excellent plot, so I skim-read them, not seeing any relevance, and still don't.
There seemed too many diverse threads - the shooting of Erma, the misconduct complaints against Erma at the university where she works (was this ever resolved?), Erma's unofficial investigation into Jenny's background taking her into a world of drugs and hookers, Erma's own dysfunctional family, and then all the weirdness once she's kidnapped.
I gave up halfway through but skimmed through so I knew roughly what happened. But I still don't understand why. The premise without the fantasy element was fine, but once that started you had no idea which way it was going to go.
