The blurb promised a thriller, a hunt for answers about a random shooting by a colleague that almost left Erma dead. But what was delivered was the most random, and frankly terrible book I've ever read. To be perfectly honest the only reason I finished the book was because I received it as an advance reader copy on the basis I would read the book and leave an honest review. The book jumps between a normal story and excerpts from a "choose your own adventure" book. There was no warning this was what you were going to get until you reach a random part of the book about Serco the barbarian. At first Emma's story and the Serco story are kept separate, however when they start to blend in to one story is when the whole thing goes off at a tangent and becomes pretty unfathomable. I've never struggled to understand a book as much as I did this one. The ending ties up a bit of the story, it also leaves a lot of unanswered questions and the reader what just happened. I can honestly say that this is the only book in my life I wished I'd never picked up. I still have no real idea about half of what was going on. I'm sorry to say that this is the only book I would ever tell anyone not to bother with, it's just not worth it.
