I’m a little bit torn about The Spiral. There were lots of things about it that I liked such as the mixed narration and the differing parts, however I found it to be a bit oddly disjointed and difficult to stay focused on. I never really felt like I connected with the characters or was overly bothered about what happened to them. Perhaps in part due to it just generally being a difficult year for reading and concentration. I think this book might appeal more to someone who enjoys science fiction or fantasy books although I don’t feel it is typical of those genres either. I think the writing is good, there is nothing about it that is particularly off putting, it just isn’t quite the story for me at this time. I would be interested in reading either of Iain's other books to see if they grab my attention more easily. Thank you to Readers First and Zaffre for my copy to read and review.
