A very enjoyable read showing life in Manchester almost 100 years ago, especially for those young women whose expectations of settling down into marriage and domesticity were dashed by the dreadful shortage of young men after so many were lost in the Great War.

There is plenty of detail for history lovers, together with family and class dynamics, feminism, coming of age and romance. Then add in some psychological and criminal details, grief and poverty, loyalty and young love. This well-plotted story has something for most tastes. It has tension and surprises. It has some very appealing characters and several of them change, growing and developing during the course of the story.

Hopefully, Polly Heron will write more historical fiction, romance and family sagas.
