Another historical fiction treat here, this time set in 1642 Dorset at the time of civil war between the King and Parliament. Whilst my post-child brain means I didn’t have much of a clue what was going on with the fighting, politics and religion, I loved this because of its brilliant characters and storytelling!

In this novel we are introduced to Jayne Swift, a physician trusted by all, who know her to be fair and neutral and willing to treat anyone who needs it irrespective of which side they fight on. Throughout her travels, she keeps meeting a young man who’s quite the mystery to her - William Harrier. As he soon becomes one of the few people she trusts with her life, she realises that perhaps she’s not destined for life as a spinster after all…

To be clear, the term spinster is from the book - I’m not in the habit of calling women that 🤣

I absolutely loved Jayne - she’s one of those brilliantly spunky characters who isn’t afraid to stand up for what’s right and to protect those weaker than herself. Even though she can never attain the title of Doctor in her time, she still becomes the most sought after physician throughout the war, and is just generally a feminist badass.

I loved the super slow burn romance between her and William - I had no idea which way it would go, but their conversations were always a joy, and you could feel the tension! Plus there’s a cast of brilliant other characters surrounding them which is what made this such a compelling and enjoyable read for me.
