A period adventure
Minette Walters must have enjoyed researching this period and developing her heroine Jayne Swift. She is a Royalist physician, living in Devon in 1642 during the civil war. But she vows to treat anyone on either side who needs her care. Despite being a woman she has gained respect for her skills.
She gets stuck in a siege and sets up a hospital treating the injuries from the bombardment by Royalist forces winning the love and trust of those she’s working beside despite being a female and not a parliamentarian!
The plot has a few surprises and shocks and will keep you wanting to read more. The characters are believable and nicely constructed. As you would expect a well written novel by a clever experienced author. I have no hesitation in recommending this book to other readers of this genre.
I was given this book in return for an honest review.
