Set in 1642 during the English civil war this book blends fact with fiction effortlessly and gives the reader a gripping tale that kept me hooked throughout.

The story follows Jayne Swift who wants to keep neutral during the war but due to her family and her healing capabilities she is put under the spotlight on more than one occasion. Using her neutral status Jayne uses her medical know how to help both sides! It is during this time, on her way to tend to her cousin’s gravely ill son that she meets William Harrier. Each feel equally drawn to one another which propels us into their love story that is woven throughout the book beautifully. With their love stories and the civil war story unfolding, I soon realised that I didn’t know what to make of Harrier, is he what he seems? Working for both sides or simply out to use the conflict for his own personal game no matter the cost? The fact that he is such a Chameleon throughout this books really kept me gripped until the final page.

I loved this book because I loved the character of Jayne especially, she is strong, smart, determined and caring and I think her character is written beautifully, her quick wit and honest talking really made me admire her.
The plot flows really well and the ending was great! Clearly a lot of research was done for this book and it shows, in its historical aspect as you get a real feel for the mechanics of war and what goes on under the surface as well as above it! The medical parts of the books are also really well told and slightly gruesome as Jayne assists in medical procedures that would have taken place at that time.

Overall, I loved this book. I don’t tend to read much historical fiction but this story and the quality of the writing really pulled me in from the first page and the characters were so well developed that they stuck with me long after I finished the last page. If you like well-developed characters, writing peppered with humour and suspense, historical fictions or aspects of the civil war then pick this book up you won’t regret it.
