I really enjoyed this book. The English Civil War isn't a period in history I'm familiar with in any detail, and I haven't read about it since my school days. Here it is an engaging and exciting backdrop to the story. The author weaves in a substantial amount of information about the social and political history of the time. I found it very interesting.
There's a strong feminist story portrayed via Jayne Swift. She's a very likeable character and the respect she engenders in the characters of the book is believable. I enjoyed learning about the medical practice and understanding of the time.
I'm shallow enough to prefer a love interest running through a historical novel to keep me interested. This story did not disappoint. The mysterious character of Sir William Harrier provides a good romantic lead. The growing relationship between the two was entertaining and made the drier details of the political intrigue that much more palatable. It was an exciting and satisfying read.
