The Swift and The Harrier is an epic historical adventure and romance, set around Dorset and covering events before during and after the English Civil War.

The author's vivid descriptions immerse us in the festering brutality and bitterness of the conflict between the Royalists and the Parliamentarians. We see snapshots over time of the characters, reflecting the course of the conflict and the changes in society over time as events unfold.

Jayne Swift is unusual both as a female medical practitioner, and through the unconventional modern techniques she employs. She first meets William, who she later learns comes from a long line of Harriers, when he helps her gain access to her cousin's house in order to treat a young boy who's condition is failing to improve using the established medicines of the time.

Swift takes a dangerous position of refusing to take sides and travelling around by herself to treat people on both sides of the conflict.

A lot of attention is paid to historical details making this an informative and engaging read.

This is my first novel by the author but I look forward to reading more
