I loved this book! From the first page I was hooked. I chose The Swift and The Harrier because of the setting, the English Civil War was a defining moment in the history of our country. Minette Walters has managed to capture the many different sides to the conflict, showing all sides equally without judgement, using both ordinary people, good and bad on both sides, and historical characters, both famous and some not so well-known. She weaves a web drawing everyone together as the country descends into savagery and betrayal, depicting the beliefs and attitudes of all the factions.
The writing is so vivid you can almost see the surroundings, and smell the blood, pitching you right in the middle of the action, making you care and fear for the main characters, hoping they can find a way through the bloodthirsty times and live their lives in peace.
