This book was just what I needed - a life-affirming, inspiring story of women who have made the world sit up and take notice. Set in the mid-1600's, this book takes us diving into a world of war, allegiance and fate. It has the perfect balance of romance and adventure. Jayne and Alice, the main female characters of the book, are both pioneers in their own way. Alice, as a painter, and Jayne, as a doctor (albeit unlicensed but fully qualified), are ambitious and likeable. They take no prisoners when it comes to those they disagree with and put many a man to shame.
I particularly love that Jayne doesn't get suddenly side-tracked by the developing romance between her and Sir William. She acknowledges it but refuses to let it distract her from her dreams, in much the same way he does. They make a perfect team.
This is also a story about family, finding it, making it and keeping it. I would recommend this book to everyone. You can't fail to gain something from reading it.
