I love Minette Walter's writing and characterisation whatever the genre and I love that she has turned her attention to the English Civil War, not usually one of my favourite periods of history but she managed to create a very interesting tale!

Most of the book is set during the siege of Lyme Regis, something I had never even heard of, and I was really into it. Jayne Swift, a physician with a divided family, is fascinating to read about. William Harrier, the other character focused on, was a mysterious read. My favourite characters, though, were Jayne's father and the Duke.

I think the effects of the conflict on the older generations are especially interesting. I would have liked more of some bits and there is a certain inevitability about how it develops but this is a fine novel that I would certainly recommend, even if you are not into historical fiction. 4 stars, almost 5.
