Another wonderful historical tale from Minette Walters. This is a real page-turner that once started I did not want to put down. The central love story of William and Jayne is a slow burner, which true to the times takes years to develop. The author describes the privations and horror of the civil war from both sides, with split allegiances occurring in families.
There is also the matter of inheritance and snobbery woven in. The characters are painted in believable detail and there is a thread of care and kindness among them as well as the rivalries and jealousies.
Also there are passages that made me laugh at the absurdities of some of the characters behaviour and the flirtations and manipulation going on to achieve the results they wanted.
The air of mystery around William and who he truly is adds another layer to the story. I also enjoyed her previous two historical novels and look forward to her next one.
