A genuine must read, for all.
This is probably one of the best books I have ever read.
It is a stark reminder of the capabilities of human beings and an almost compulsory reminder of the atrocities and suffering endured by a generation not too far removed from ourselves.
It is a story of love amidst survival, and the fact that it was developed from someone's real life experiences just made me bawl even harder at the end!
(Probably not the best choice for a night shift in a psychiatric hospital!)
I also loved that details of how the book was written, as well as details of those involved are included at the end too. Hearing and seeing how Lale and his family lived after the war made me root for their characters even more, and makes me feel more invested to research that time in history more.
The book is well written and details poignantly how truly awful life was in those places, and serves as a reminder that again, that time was not to far from our own. Stories like this must continue to be heard.
