This book takes you inside the concentration camp of Auswitch. It follows the journey in and out of the main character. It follows his fight for survival, working his way through the ranks. It shows his humility to other prisoners despite his own suffering. He shares his food with those in a less fortunate position - love can be found in times of immense hatred.

The writing was incredible. The story is a re-creation of prisoner of Auswitch and I feel guilty only giving it three stars. Again there was nothing wrong with the writing or the story. The problem was the hype around the book. When you read other peoples reviews about how upsetting the book is you build up expectations. This book was certainly sad, and although (spoiler) there was a positive ending, I expected to feel more inner turmoil than I had felt. While the protagonist snuck around seeing his lover I felt suspense, sadness was not something I felt reading this novel.

It is an important historical retelling that I think people should read. It explores parts of the concentration camps that have never really be presented before. I just suggest going into it not having too many expectations!
