I’ve read a few books about the Holocaust and I’ve visited the concentration camps at Auschwitz and Birkenau so I wasn’t too sure that I would enjoy reading more about this horrendous period. However, although the novel is based on true events it presents the view from a survivors standpoint with less emphasis on death than might be expected.
The reader is left to decided if the actions of the survivor made him a collaborator or was he just so determined to survive that he pushed the boundaries.
Was he a hero by risking his life to help others or just developing friendships which could be called upon when needed.
He was certainly very lucky to have qualities, such as being multilingual, which certainly helped him survive.
The author presents a gripping novel and records events which should never be forgotten.
I found it interesting that the postscript describing the authors visit to the survivors home town was written in such a different style perhaps an insight to how much editing the body of the story had received.
