It sounds wrong to say it, but I loved this book. It's haunting but at the same time the ending is really very uplifting.

The book is written from the point of view of Lale, a Slovakian Jew who on the premise of saving his family willingly goes to the concentration camps. Here, he manages to get himself working alongside the current Tattooist. His job is to permanently mark incoming prisoners with their number. This particular job earns him a certain amount of privilege and leniency with the guards as his job is essential to the running of the camps.

One day he tattoos a girl and he can't get her out of his head. He goes on to discover her name, Gita.

This book tells the harrowing story of life in the concentration camps, but also shows the story between Lale and Gita evolve. Love really does conquer all!
