It was okay but the writing let the story down!

Going in, I was aware of the hype. It seems like everyone and their mother had read this book, and they all seemed to love it. However, I really don't understand why.
It read like a movie and is so surface level. The author didn't really flesh out the characters, so it was hard to picture them as real people, which is such a shame given that this is based on a true story. I wanted to be able to feel what the characters were feeling but, as they felt so one-dimensional, it was hard to get any emotion of the page. Given the topic of the book, emotions should spill of the page and it should've been character-driven. We don't really get to know or understand the characters or their backgrounds.
It's not that I hated this because it did give an afternoon of enjoyable reading, but I do feel that the writing let the story and the people whose story it belongs down.
