I waited a while before starting this book, as I had heard mixed reviews, both good and bad. I love history and I was worried about tarnishing a subject I had already studied in such depth. However, when I picked it up, I quickly fell into the story and found it difficult to put down. The story of Lale and the extent he goes to, fighting for love and for the slightest safety of those around him was so inspiring. One of my favourite quotes from him was 'to save one is to save the world', and the little things he does to help those around him really strengthen the meaning of that quote.

The writing was similar to the boy in the striped pyjamas and was as a melancholy but heartbreaking story as that was. In all, I loved this book, fighting for love, and the powerful message at the end. I immediately bought the second book in the series as I needed the other characters' perspectives on the horrific moment in history.
